
I always host Friday night dinner at my house so I thought just for fun I’d try my hand at a rendition of thanksgiving dinner. Apologies about the flag, just pretend I cut out 50 tiny stars. We’ve got turkey, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts gratin, macaroni cheese, stuffing, mash potatoes, homemade buns and Green bean casserole which is a miss for me personally.

You absolutely left off the cranberry log and the candied yams with marshmallow fluff.
Green bean casserole can be a miss for folks, but it might also be that you used the wrong type of beans and it looks like your bean to sauce/soup ratio was a little off as well. Overall quite a nice attempt!

Looks good. However, the green bean casserole doesn’t look traditional. Maybe that’s why it was a miss. We always make it with canned beans, cream of mushroom or chicken and crunchy French onions on top. The only time I made ot with fresh beans, it didn’t taste right.
Gravy to mashed potatoes ratio is spot on.

I’d really like to try a authentic thanksgiving meal, because it always looks fun, but when I see people posting their plates on Reddit it always looks like a Leftovers meal

Everything looks good, but the green bean casserole does look a little non-traditional. That might be why it didn’t land. I’ve always had it with canned beans, cream of mushroom (or chicken), and crispy French onions. I tried fresh beans once and it just wasn’t the same.

Red cabbage? I’m a bit mystified by that. Almost everything else looks great. Even if it cooked well, a spatchcocked turkey looks wrong.

Nice attempt! I’d throw down on this. One suggestion: gotta use chopped green beans in that casserole vs whole, and a big layer of fried onions on top, not enough onion there. Also sorry to say that looks like a dry, sad looking turkey.
Love that your turkey is waving at us. I tuck the wings before roasting. Red cabbage is the oddity to me. I’m also not a fan of green bean casserole (didn’t grow up eating it in Southern California). Brussels sprouts gratin a new one too, but sounds like a yummy side. Love the addition of mac n cheese. I lived many, many years in the south and it’s a thanksgiving staple and always part of our meal. You’re just missing candied yams or sweet potatoes with marshmallow (I don’t eat those either, but very southern), and pumpkin pie. Good job!
No one has red cabbage, but it sounds much better to me than a lot of thanksgiving sides. In fact, it’s gonna make it into my Thanksgiving routine next year!

The dressing looks more like a loaf. Should be light and fluffy (as a gravy absorber). Brussels sprouts in cream doesn’t sound good to me.

Well, having been raised by my British mum, not bad for your first attempt. Again, based on my childhood experiences, ill assume that turkey is drier than a camel’s ass. Mum would overcook all meats, then drown it in gravy. It was like eating wood, but with less taste. Full marks on effort!!
Looks like you did a great job ! Brussels aren’t necessarily a super common dish in the US, probably less for thanksgiving but that green bean casserole is absolutely a classic. I swear it’s the only time of year cream of mushroom soup sells. In our household we prefer it on the drier side. We’d probably use twice as many greenbeans for that pan. We also place the little fried onion crisps in it and on it – again probably the only time of year those things sell well lol; it’s one of those very traditional recipes that was likely created by the onion crisp company decades ago but became very popular and works well.
It needs a pie – pecan, pumpkin or sweet potato are all acceptable.
It also needs candied yams.

If you make it a tradition, try sweet potato casserole next time too (with a pecan crunch topping, don’t listen to the heretics with their marshmallows). It’s pretty tasty and a staple at a lot of tables!
Years ago when I was studying in Germany on an exchange year, we did something similar and invited our fellow international exchange students, as a potluck. I was in charge of one of two turkeys, and it was in fact the first turkey I had ever personally cooked! Our city was near a US army base and we had a connect on the inside that procured two frozen turkeys for us. I was very nervous about messing it up but I think I nailed it, haha. Several other Americans brought the staple sides and we encouraged others to bring their favorite dish from their home countries. It was such a fun evening!
Most real thing is the gravy being made and served outta the Pyrex measuring cup 😂👍

Some people just don’t like green bean casserole; I prefer a recipe like Alton Brown’s green bean casserole. The standard canned green beans and canned mushroom soup will do in a pinch, but definitely not the best there is. Hope you enjoyed your feast!
